Kwana Island

KWANA ISLAND (STUWMEER)

The official name of the lake which is generally called “stuwmeer”, is Prof. Dr. Ir. Van Blommenstein Lake, named after his designs. This lake was established in the latter part of the 50’s. It is also known as the Brokopondo Stuwmeer and has a surface of about 13.000 square km. When the area where the lake was to come was submerged, 22 Maroon villages of the Saramacca tribe were completely laid under. The old mountain tops are now present as small islands in the lake.
In recent years there has been a lot of gold mining in the area around the stuwmeer, where mostly gold dust is extracted.
