Apetina

APETINA

Apetina is an indigenous village of the Wayanas, located in the district of Sipaliwini in the upstream section of the Tapahony River. Although there is some level of communication between different indigenous villages and also between maroons in the interior, all villages are situated at quite a distance from one another. Apetina has an airstrip and can be reached by small aircraft from Paramaribo within approximately 1,5 hours.  The population of Apetina consists (per 2005) of approximately 580 inhabitants. The number of males and females is almost equal while half of the population consists of youngsters.

Itinerary Apetina 4/ 5 day tour
You depart from the Zorg & Hoop airport for your flight of 1,5 hours to the airstrip at Apetina. After your arrival you take a short boat ride of 5 minutes to the lodge of the Kuluwajak Foundation. The following activities are all part of your tour: During the first village tour you are introduced to the Granman (Head of the tribe), the village leaders and the villagers. Afterwards you can rest in a hammock or take a refreshing dive the Punsula rapids. During your second tour of the village you are introduced more closely to the daily activities of the villagers through for example a visit to the development projects of the Kuluwajak Foundation, the school and the traditional medical clinic. You can also witness traditional activities such as the weaving of hammocks and the production of cassava bread.  A boat trip to the 400 meter high bare granite rock the “Tebutop”, which you can then climb. From the top you have a breathtaking view of the Tropical Rainforest and the other mountains in the area (Roseveltpiek, Kasikasima en de Magneetrots).During your trip to the Tebutop you have the opportunity to overnight at the Grandfutu sula. In tents you will put up by yourself, you can enjoy the untouched nature and the rapids.More adventurous types can continue on with the boat towards Ingipikin rapids, the Wayana fishing grounds for the Ayumara , Kumalu, Kubie and of course the Pirania. In a boat trip of 1 hour downstream from the nature resort lays the small village Tutukampu, where you can if you wish overnight in the dome-shaped community building according to Wayana tradition. From this camp you will go on an educational forest walk with a local Peyai- man (shaman) during which he gives information on several medicinal herbs and other natural materials the Wayana use from the forest. True adventurers can choose to take a boat- and walking trip to the Rosevelt peak. The peak is surrounded by several rock granite formations which can reach heights of up to 750 meters. This mountain is relatively easy to climb to height of about 660 meters but beyond that, it is only recommended for experienced mountain climbers with special equipment. This does not limit the fun however, because traveling over the narrow winding creek with rapids and camping alongside the creek make a real jungle experience of your trip to the Rosevelt peak. In the surroundings of Pilewime (Apetina) there are enough trips possible to hills which can be climbed with less exertion.
