AWARRADAM

Hidden deep within the Amazon rainforest, on an idyllic island located at the bottom of the Awarradam rapids in the Gran Rio River, is the Awarradam Jungle Lodge Resort. This resort is located at approximately half an hour by boat from the last Saramaccan maroon village. Visits to traditional villages, exiting boat trips, the imposing Grandam rapids and jungle hikes filled with information on medicinal plants will all make your stay at Awarradam unforgettable.‘Awaadan’' makes up part of the area known as 'Langu'. Langu consists of 8 villages: Bendiwata, Kuututen, Ligolio, Bëgoon, Kajana, Deböö, Godowata en Stonhuku. Ligolio is a Christian village while the other villages are governed according to traditional methods. The traditional villages are best recognized by their boat landing with a ‘gateway’ of palm leaves. This ‘azanpau’ is meant to protect the village from negative influences from the outside.

From the airstrip you are transferred to a canoe which will take you on a ride of approximately 30 minutes over the Gran Rio River towards your vacation destination. After checking in you will be served lunch and can afterwards spend the afternoon in the rapids. The nights are spent in a pleasant atmosphere and the meals are prepared, with primarily local ingredients. On the first night you will receive more information on the area.

Day 2
After breakfast you will go on an educational “jungle walk” during which you will thoroughly enjoy the sights and sounds of the virginal tropical rainforest. After lunch you pay a visit to the ‘Peti’.rapids. Here you can choose to swim, explore the surroundings in a canoe or enjoy the view of the rapids from the comfort of a hammock. In the afternoon you will be taken by boat, to the residential area of the Sarramaccan tribes where you will take a stroll through several villages. Dinner will be served at Kajana after which you are treated to cultural dance- and song performances.

Day 3
Today you will be given the opportunity to enjoy the river and local culture extensively. While visiting the villages you will enjoy nature and with some luck you may even see a cayman lying on the banks of the river. At the Grandam rapids you get back on land and are given the opportunity to swim in the rapids, explore the surroundings or to enjoy it all from the comfort of a hammock. After lunch you start your boat ride back to the resort. Along the way a stop is made at one of the villages where you can admire or even purchase locally handcrafted souvenirs.

Day 4
On this last morning you are free to once more enjoy a canoe ride, swimming, a jungle walk or just a quiet and restful enjoyment of the sounds of the jungle. Next, our co workers tell you goodbye in their own traditional way as you start your trip back towards Kajana. From Kajana you are flown back Paramaribo.
